Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen

Visitors' guide for your excursion to Neuschwanstein Castle

The royal palaces of King Ludwig II. can only be visited in a guided tour. The tickets can be bought at the ticket center Hohenschwangau. Please note that the tour takes place at a certain time. Come to the meeting point on time, as tours start punctually and visitors who are late will not be considered. From the ticket center you will reach Neuschwanstein Castle within 30-40 minutes via an upward footpath. Alternatively, you have the possibility to go to the castle by bus or by horse-drawn carriage. The stop is not right at the castle, though, but at the Marienbrücke. From here you will have to walk approx. 15 minutes downward.

Because the number of visitors to the castle is limited, tickets are often sold out several days in advance during highly frequented times. Moreover, considerable waiting times at the ticket counters must be expected. Therefore, we recommend to book your ticket online in advance. The pre-booked tickets must be collected at a separate counter 1.5 hours before at the latest. A later admission can not be guaranteed.

The Bavarian Administration of Palaces clearly points out that pets are not allowed in the castle. Due to the limited space, strollers, frame rucksacks as well as rucksacks unfortunately cannot be taken with you into the castle.

How long does a guided tour last at Neuschwanstein Castle?

The tour of the castle lasts approx. 30 minutes. Keep in mind, however, that you will have to get up to the castle first and that there are nice walks on the premises. In summer, a crossing of the Marienbrücke is worth the time and will give you a special view. Moreover, we recommend a visit of King Ludwig II.’s youth castle: Hohenschwangau Castle. All in all, a visit to the royal palaces including an exploration of the premises takes about 3.5 hours.

When should you visit Neuschwanstein Castle?

It is best to visit Neuschwanstein Castle during the week off-season. During the holidays, numerous tourists are in the castle – especially in the summer months and around Christmas. Moreover, you should begin your excursion to the royal palaces in the early morning hours.

How far is Neuschwanstein Castle from the Hotel Zum Hechten?

The fairy-tale castle of King Ludwig II.’s is about 4 km from the hotel. We recommend to go there by bus (line 73 & line 78). The bus ride takes 10 minutes and is free with the FussenCard.
