Kings Castle & Romantik Marathon in Bavaria
In July, Fussen gets sporty! Every year, hundreds of runners from all over the world come to the old town of Fussen to celebrate a sports event of superlatives: The Königsschlösser Romantik Marathon. Due to its route through the Königswinkel, the marathon belongs to the most beautiful long-distance running events in Germany.
Characteristics of the marathon
Not only the view of the eponymous royal castles makes the marathon unique, also the route through the Allgau lake district is an absolute highlight for the participants. The 26 miles course runs over 50% asphalt and 50% good forest paths and has slight ascents of up to 90 meters of altitude. Every 3 miles or 1.5 miles, respectively (from 10 miles), the runners can rest at the refreshment stations and cool down with refreshing drinks. So nothing stands in the way of a successful marathon!
Route of the Fussen Marathon
The signal to start the Königsschlösser Romantik Marathon is given every year on a Sunday in July at 7.30 am in the old town of Fussen. Then the runners proceed to the the Allgau lake district. At first, the participants have to go round the crystal clear Hopfensee which belongs to the warmest lakes in the alpine foothills. Past the Musical Theater Neuschwanstein the route then leads to the Forggensee. In the next section the runners can marvel at the royal castles’ facades while running on flat terrain. Right below the famous Neuschwanstein Castle and the Hohenschwangau Castle, the route leads past the Schwansee and along the Lech river with a view of the High Castle Fussen. Close to the Mittersee, the only considerable ascent has to be overcome before the runners head back to the cheering fan zone along the Kempten road.
Fussen half marathon & 6 mile race
Those for whom the 26 miles are too much can enroll for the half marathon or the 6 mile race, both of which take place on the day before the Königsschlösser Romantik Marathon. The 6 mile Fussen City race leads through the old town, along the Lech riverside and the fan zone at the Morisse. Therefore, not only professional athletes, but also hobby sportsmen will get their money’s worth. For children who love running there are races for different age groups starting every 15 minutes. After the award ceremony, an after-show party takes place in the event arena in the Kempten road. With a varied music & show program, the day’s athletic performances are celebrated!
No matter if you participate in the event yourself or cheer the runners on - the Königsschlösser Romantik Marathon is worth a visit for everyone. We wish all guests a lot of fun, and if you are still looking for an accommodation for the Königsschlösser Marathon, the Altstadthotel Zum Hechten with its central location in the old town is the ideal place!
